This isn’t my usual kind of sidewalk marking, but I got a kick out of it, so here you go. Someone on the east side of North Magnolia Avenue between Fernwood and Saginaw has written their house number quite large on their driveway concrete. You’d think this would be more common, actually, but I haven’t seen it before.
S. Clemens Ave., KLH, undated
I pass this house all the time, on the east side of South Clemens Avenue between Michigan and Prospect. Its front walk is marked “KLH” and it is so neat and central that I have come to think of it as the house’s monogram.
It seems that it may be the mark of KLH Contracting, a home remodeling company in Pinckney. Unfortunately, their web site doesn’t give a company history. Open Corporates has an incorporation date of February 3, 2016.
Regent St., O & M, undated
Continuing my catalog of Regent Street, here is an undated O & M (Operations and Maintenance) stamp from the east side of Regent Street’s 400 block between Kalamazoo and Elizabeth. It’s a shame O & M was in the habit of not dating stamps at some point probably in the 2000s, but at least it’s stamped at all.
Lathrop St., Wm. Haskins, undated
I collected this pair of William Haskins stamps on my way to go vote at my polling place (the Pilgrim Congregational Church). Lansing had a city council and mayoral primary today. The stamps are in a pleasant little shady corridor on the south side of Prospect just east of Lathrop.
Unfortunately I have yet to find a dated William Haskins stamp, though there are a fair number of them sprinkled around this area, and I still don’t know anything about the contractor.
Regent St., P. Beasley, undated
This stamp is on what I call the “other” Regent Street, the blocks south of I-496. It’s on the east side of the street between Walsh and East Malcolm X.
It appears undated. The only other P. Beasley stamp I’ve found is dated 1960, so it might be from around that time period.
E. Kalamazoo St., illegible name, undated
This is on a driveway apron on the south side of East Kalamazoo Street between Leslie and Shepard. It caught my eye because I didn’t recognize it as one of the usuals, but unfortunately despite my best efforts I wasn’t able to read it.
I believe I have this oriented the right way up, based on the “T” I think I see in it, but I can’t be sure. If I’m right, then it faces the street.
Prospect St., Zerbe (?), undated
This is from the south side of Vine Street between Francis and Kipling. I had this one in my notes as “illegible” but on today’s walk the sun was just right for bringing it out. It appears to read “Zerbe.” That last name is not unknown around here, but I can’t seem to find evidence of any Zerbe in a relevant line of work.
It’s possible that this is just a piece of graffiti. I considered whether it might have been left by a previous resident of the house this is in front of. The house is a large Cape Cod, built in 1986, on an oversized corner lot. Unfortunately, that line of research didn’t turn anything up either.
O & M, Regent St., undated
Sorry, this is blatantly a placeholder (though I could rationalize it as part of an eventual project to exhaustively catalogue Regent Street, since I’m probably about halfway there at this point). The reason is that I went to Cedar Point today, my first time at an amusement park since 2019. It was a big day for me, so I hope you’ll forgive the modest entry. (By “you” I mean “my dear husband,” as I think he is the only person who reads these.)
Anyway, this is on the west side of the 400 block of Regent Street, between Kalamazoo and Elizabeth.
Hall of Shame: Unstamped sidewalk on Allen St.
I’m inducting this unstamped stretch of new sidewalk into the Hall of Shame. It’s located on the east side of Allen Street north of Kalamazoo, in front of the new Allen Place development. Contractor, your name is not upon the walk.
Strange that this one is unstamped, when the new sidewalk on the Shepard Street side of the building, laid late last year and earlier this one, is very neatly marked by Leavitt & Starck.
Horton St., Cantu & Sons, undated
An awful housefire happened the day before yesterday, on the west side of Horton Street between Michigan and Jerome (125 Horton). The family lost four pets and all their possessions, and the house was ruined. I walked past it today and it had already been demolished. It was a nice old house, built in 1914. The whole business is very sad.
To mark the end of the house’s time in the neighborhood, I collected the only stamps from the sidewalk out front. They are both Cantu & Sons, probably a pair. The southern stamp is undated. The northern stamp may have been dated originally; it’s hard to tell because of how worn it is. I have seen Cantu stamps in this style from 1986 and ’87, so this likely dates from around then.
